Chip Hymiller, CFP®, a principal with the Raleigh, NC, based fee-only financial planning firm Beacon Financial Strategies, spoke to a group of approximately 30 senior citizens recently, providing the group with useful tips and information on how to protect themselves from financial scams. Hymiller spoke about detection and prevention techniques on a variety of topics including email, Internet, telemarketing and direct mail scams, as well as identity theft.
“Recognizing potential scams and taking a proactive approach to preventing them are the primary factors in avoiding both financial scams and identity theft,” said Hymiller. “Hopefully, creating public awareness of the more common financial scams will help avert them in the future.”
In his discussion, Hymiller urged the group to recognize pressure sales tactics, ask lots of questions and avoid making emotional financial decisions when considering any financial offer or advice. In addition, Hymiller reminded the group that there is no such thing as a low-risk, high-return investment and that if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
